Tour of Gettysburg

These are some of the photos we took at Gettysburg and the surrounding environs. The rain finally eased up and while it was still cold we were able to tour the Battlefield before heading off to DC. Gettysburg always fills me with awe and makes me wonder what it was like for my Great Grandfather, George Leander Barnes, who fought in the Civil War with the 18th Regiment of Ohio Infantry. They weren't at Gettysburg but I imagine they fought under similar conditions as they worked their way from Cincinnati to Nashville and on to Atlanta and Savannah. The ride to the DC area and our campground in Fredericksburg, VA was only 165.8 miles so it was a relatively easy day on the road. But then we hit DC traffic and the last 50 or 60 miles was stop and go traffic jam.

Photos and commentary on Day 1

Some preliminary photos of the four of us on the way to DC. We rode 503 miles today to reach our destination at the KOA Campground in Gettysburg We're pictured here entering Pennsylvania on the Pennsylvania Turnpike headed for Gettysburg where we stayed in a KOA Campground Cabin. Quite cozy there with three men and the lovely Tamara. But, everyone behaved like proper lady and gentlemen and we had a great time. We got drenched on the Pennsylvania Turnpike but after a hot shower and a cold beer we were ready for whatever the second day was going to bring; or so we thought. It's hard to describe how hard it rained on this first leg of the trip but we were thankful we didn't have any mishaps (that came later) and we all made it safe. It was one of those rides where it was unsafe to keep riding and even more unsafe to stop. Pennsylvania needs more rest stops.

The trip is underway and we are in Gettysburg, PA. We rode about 485 miles and most of it was in the rain. We're tired, wet and figuring how to get all our gear dried out for tomorrow's ride in to DC. Photos and more updates beginning tomorrow. Blue and Tamara handled the Harley extremely well with Blue piloting the bike and Tamara taking photos along the route.
